We went to Einsiedeln to practice some skating style cross country skiing and it was a great experience. It took us just a 30 minute drive from Zurich to get to this beautiful town where you can do a bunch of winter sports.
The ski rental is located at the starting point of the Schwedentritt trail, right next to the monastery at the entrance to the Brüel car park, where you can rent the complete set of skis, boots and poles for 30 CHF. The use of the trails costs an additional 10 CHF.
There are various options of trails - 4 kms, 9 kms, and 12 kms trails which are adequate for leisurely ski touring, and there's also the 15 km and 21.1 km trails that are a bit more challenging. All of them have skating and classic skiing options, and you get a very nice view of the lake and Schwyz mountains while skiing.
You also get a view of the stunning building of the Benedictine monastery Einsiedeln Abbey which they say is also quite impressive on the inside. Will have to go back to see it.
If you are new at this sport, it might take a while to get a hang of it as your body gets used to it. You will end up dead like me down there haha but it is very much fun. Make sure to bring a change of clothes to avoid freezing after the session because you usually sweat a lot! This beautiful cross country skiing near Zurich is worth a visit.
