If you want to see the beautiful autumn colors in Switzerland, Klöntalersee lake is worth visiting. It's just around an hour train ride away from Zurich and easy to access.
I visited it with my husband on my first weekend moving to this country from Mexico (12th of november 2022), and it was an amazing way to welcome me into the country! I got a glimpse of the beautiful autumn colors all around, which are supposedly even nicer in the month of October. I am looking forward to see them this year!
The Klöntalersee is surrounded by mountains and there are lots of places to sit and admire the views. The reflection of the mountains on the lake make this place look like a painting.
Upon arrival by the train, you can take the bus from the Netstal train station to Klöntal and do some easy hiking trails around there, or just walk all around the lake and do a picnic. It is also easily accessible by car all the way from Zurich.
If you want something more intense, you can walk from the train station arrival in Netstal all they way up to the lake. This is what we did because we wanted to do some training. It is an 16 kilometer hike (both ways) with 470 meters elevation gain which you don't even notice because of the stunning views along the way.
The view you get once the 8 kilometer climb is done of the Klöntalersee is like a prize after the hike, where we sat in a bench and had a picnic.
And of course you get very typical swiss encounters like the cows sitting everywhere while you explore this Glarus region by foot. Make sure to put it on the list of places to visit this year in autumn! It's one of the best autumn hikes I've done near Zurich.
